Filmed oral history interview with George Hix on November 7, 2005 at the Twin Owls Steakhouse. This interview is number 2 of 12 in a series of oral histories conducted in 2005. Filmed and produced by Nick Molle Productions of Estes Park Topics discussed include Hix's early life and family history, his grandparents' arrival in Estes Park, his college years, work at the Estes Park Bank, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, the Lawn Lake Flood, his years as commissioner, twelve years in Town government, changes in Estes, meeting wife and having a family, retirement, his military service in Korea, time in Denver, relatives, the Estes Park Auditorium, Hidden Valley Ski Area, and Cheley camp, Don Cheley, climbing on Longs Peak, Flying over Estes Park, youth friends, clubs, and activities, and service in the airforce. Notable memories include: --Paternal grandparents came from Pennsylvania while maternal grandparents came from Iowa to Estes Park --Attending school in Estes Park then a business degree from the University of Colorado --Father initially running the Estes Park Bank which was the only bank in Estes for a time --Began involvement in being banker --Changes in local community during time as banker --Involvement with the Chamber of Commerce to get a year-round road thru Rocky Mountain National Park --Involvement with Federal Reserve then vice-president, president, CEO --Repercussions from the Lawn Lake Flood on banking community --Town government involvement; Harry Tregent asked George to be a commissioner. Beat out Bob Burgess for town council and served for twelve years; was the mayor pro tem for the final year. --One of the boons to town development relationship with PRPA --Improvement of downtown with Estes Park Urban Renewal Authority after Lawn Lake Flood --Another biggest change occurred in modernizing the outlook of doing business --Memories of friend John Hazlitt --Involved with the Rocky Mountain National Park as ski patrol at Hidden Valley Ski Area --Memories of Cheley Camp --Memories of airport landing strip where 18-hole golf course is now |
