Audio recording of an interview of Dr. Thomas (Tom) Hornbein, rock climber by Kelly Cordes, alpinist. Interview took place on November 16, 2012 in Tom's living room/kitchen. Filmed by Brian Brown. ABSTRACT: Dr. Tom Hornbein first experienced the Estes Valley at age 13 when attending Trail's End Ranch. His passion for climbing grew while attending the University of Colorado and later when serving as a Park Naturalist at Rocky Mountain National Park in summers during his medical school years in St. Louis. He was one of the signers of the Articles of Incorporation of Rocky Mountain Rescue. Tom Hornbein has extensive climbing experience beyond in Rocky Mountain National Park, most notably along with Willi Unsoeld, accomplishing the first assent of the West Ridge of Mt. Everest in 1963. Dr. Hornbein had a long career at the Departments of Anesthesiology and Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Washington. His interview includes many names of the Estes Park climbing community. Tom retired to Estes Park in 2006. Note: Added material appears in brackets. |
