Produced by Nick Molle Productions of Estes Park Has lived in Estes Park since June 1968, transferred by Public Service Company Lot of interest in government Elected to the board of Upper Thompson Sanitation District when district established and served seven years Board got the sanitation plant built, new lines installed, cleaned up environment Was a difficult getting residents to sign and hook up to sewer system from septic UTSD has increased in size along with population here Involvement on town board briefly little over a year until he moved out of city limits Issues he faced was the energy crisis in the '70s encouraging residents to better insulate; planning for new water system; acquiring various areas to turn into parking lots Became member of fire department in 1972 Elected assistant chief under Bob Cheney in 1976 who retired in '77-'78 Elected as chief in 1978 and followed Bob's policies and programs certifying volunteers Kinds of training included certification in CPR and eight or nine EMTs even then Served as chief for 17 years Changes in downtown he notices are lot of family-owned business all gone now Population has changed basically now more retired people and younger people leaving Proud of fire department response time for a volunteer group Great thing is the fire department no longer save foundations, they save buildings Auto accidents have increased, medical calls handled better as volunteers are scattered over the valley where sometimes your next door neighbor is a fireman who's an EMT Remembers the Plectron stationary unit you had at home for the alarm Impressions of changes since Lawn Lake Flood Fire Department very involved in Big Thompson Flood tragedy Feels fortunate that the major storm cell just about over Crocker Ranch than Estes Park Fifteen inches of rain in a little over two hours Feels the small little town that was in 1968 now really a progressive city |
