Two page typed reminiscence of Judy Shafer Dodge, former Estes Park resident. At the time of the interview in 2009, Judy was 71 years old. Judy discusses moving to Estes Park with her parents, Adella and George Shafer, when she was six years old in 1943. She talks about school, recess, reading at the library, McDonald's bookstore, living in the Reclamation area/district, and the Fourth of July. She discusses her best friends, locals Anita Low and Kay McKelvey. Kay's parents, Russ and Florence, operated the Fall River Lodge in the Rocky Mountain National Park until it was torn down in the early 1950s or 60s. Talks about Art & Bill Card who owned a stable on Elkhorn Avenue and ran the horses at the Fall River Lodge. Mentions Charlie Eagle Plume. Talks about a trip to Lawn Lake with friend Beverly Lane and her father, park ranger Loren Lane in 1949. Discusses the use of coal as a heating source, and how they handled a United Mine Workers strike. Mentions the Stanley Hotel, moose and elk in the Rocky Mountain National Park, and the ethnic composition of the grade school including Hawaiian boys, the Wonwais and Velma Sandoval. Mentions Peter Kiewit. Adella discusses her move to Estes Park in September 1943 with husband George and daughter Juday. George worked as an electrical engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation. The family lived in the Reclamation Area (Reclamation District) at 311 3rd Street. She discusses tensions between locals and new residents; joining the Women's Club, the Home Demonstration Club, the PTA, a bridge club, the Rotary Club and Masons (George), square dancing; joining the Community Church of the Rockies; being the only substitute teacher during and after World War II; scarcities after the war; the Big Thompson Project; a power outage George had to deal with on July 4th, 1947; the Alva B. Adams Tunnel; Moreheads, Brodies, and Piggly Wiggly markets; amongst other subjects. |
