Raymond "Ray" Northcutt is a pioneer mountaineer. Ray started climbing in the 1950s and is credited with many first assents and solo assents. Ray instructed climbing and skiing as he served with the famed Tenth Mountain Division of the U.S. Army. Ray describes his five year career as a high school teacher in Montana and Estes Park. The Northcutt/Carter route on Hallett's Peak, the Diagonal Route on the East Face of Longs Peak, the first 5.10d solo assent in the United States, the first solo assent of the Red Garden Wall in Eldorado Canyon, and the Northcutt Direct Route on the Bastille are a few of Ray Northcutt's famous climbs. Ray mentions many other early climbers with special recognition of one of his favorite climbing partners, Layton Kor. |
