Notes |
Frank was born in February 1926 and grew up in Estes Park, CO. His father, Charles F. Hix, had been hired in 1909 by F.O. Stanley to work at the newley formed Estes Park Bank, and eventually he came to own the bank. Frank graduated from the University of Colorado with two degrees; one in Electrial Engineering and one in Mechanical Engineering. He served in the Navy for two years and then was hired by General Electric as a trainee. His 33-year career took him to many departments of the company. He retired as the Manager of Engineering and Manufacturing with the Housewares Department in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In 1981, Frank and Alma moved to Estes Park and built their retirement home. Frank's connection with Estes Park and his acquaintance with F.O. Stanley renewed his interest in history and in Steam Cars. In 1983, he and his partner Dick Paynter acquired a 1913 Stanley Mountain Wagon, which they operated on tours in Estes Park for twelve years. They also drove it on several Western Steam car tours. Then in 1986 Frank purchased a 1919 Model 735 seven-passenger Touring Car which he restored in nine months. It has been a reliable touring car for many years and is still in his possession. He restored a 1916 Roadster which he eventually sold to Lynn Curry, and a 1912 Model 63 Toy Tonneau that had originally belonged to Jay Williams. Frank and Alma were both very active in the Estes Park Museum and the Stanley Museum, where Frank has served as a Trustee and currently serves as a Stanley Museum advisor. They helped organize several tours, and enjoyed many years of touring with their Steam cars and Steam car friends. In 2012, the Estes Park Museum awarded Frank the first annual Pioneer Award. |
