Notes |
"John Kirsch, while being held captive as a Russian prisoner during WW I, actually had art save his life. Drawings he had created on teh walls of his cell from stubs of charcoal from his stove, aroused the anger of a prison guard. Before beating Kirsch for disfiguring the walls, the guard decided to report the incident to his superior. The superior, an art lover, saw the drawings and realized Kirsch was a gifted artist. He arranged to have Kirsch released from prison, and the artist spent the remainder of WW I teaching Russian nobility to paint. Born in Austria, Kirsch met his wife and married before coming to the United States. He made his living by painting large murals on the walls of churches. He painted in the broad European style, and became well known for his dramatic skies. His studio in Estes Park was located in the High Drive area, and for many summers, visitors came to appreciate his art. Added 09/11/2013 by Hoerner, B from information found in Mel Busch Archives." |
