Description |
Acrylic painting by Lyman Byxbe titled "Longs Peak from Bear Lake." Painted on hand-stretched canvas, the view looks across Bear Lake with rocks and yellow aspen trees visible in foreground, Longs Peak visible in background. Painting purchased by donor's father and his law partner in early 1950s from Byxbe Gallery in Estes Park. Painting was still wet at time of purchase and sent to them in Iowa several weeks later. It hung in their law office in Iowa until donor's father's death in 1991. Thereafter, it hung in donor's mother's house until her death in 1996. It then hung in donor's home in Iowa until move in 2017. Donor's home was broken into in 2009, the painting was slashed. It was later repaired by Greig Steiner in Estes Park. Steiner determined the painting to be a good example of Byxbe's color work in his mid-to-late period of activity. The middle ground and water are recognized as particularly effective, as well as the details in the mountains. |
