Scope & Content |
Handwritten manuscript of handwritten copied pages from Charles Edwin Hewes's journal. 13 copied pages from Charles Edwin Hewes' journal, written by Janet (Ridsdale) Justice-Waddington during a stay at the Hewes-Kirkwood Inn. The pages detail the story of Agnes Vaille's winter climb of Longs Peak in January 1925 which resulted in her death - as told to Hewes by Walter Kiener. Kiener was Vaille's guide on the night of the failed climb. Justice-Waddington recognized the importance of the journal and believed they should be published, thus with permission from the Inn's then-owner, Paul Nesbit, she stayed up late into the night to copy them, eventually relying on her friend Patty Nelson to finish the last few pages. A typewritten copy (2021.010.001b) was made by Justice-Waddington and sent to several publications to print over the years. Eventually the typed copy was found by Dr. James Pickering in an old filing cabinet in Boulder during research for one of his projects. After printing his research, Justice-Waddington reached out to Dr. Pickering to identify herself as the author of the found typed pages and coordinate sending her handwritten original. Charles Edwin Hewes' original diary is in the possession of the Estes Park Musuem - however, missing the original pages detailing this entry. .pdf attached to record as multimedia scan. |
